Full detailsCook’s Bay is the first water on Lake Simcoe to make ice. If your boat is in Keswick, your season ends before everyone else’s.
Cook’s Bay is the long southern arm of Lake Simcoe, and it is shallow. Most of it sits around four to five metres, which is why it warms up first in June and why it is reliably the first part of the lake to start freezing in the late autumn. Ice fishermen know this bay better than boaters do, and that tells you most of what you need to know about the calendar.
For a Keswick owner the practical effect is a shorter runway. Boats on Kempenfelt Bay at the Barrie end can often stay in the water two or three weeks after Cook’s Bay has started skimming over. Every year a few people here treat the lake as one season and end up hauling out in genuinely bad conditions, or paying somebody to break a boat free.
Keswick is the largest community in Georgina and most of the boats here are trailered rather than slipped: runabouts, pontoons, aluminum fishing boats, wake boats. Many live in a driveway between outings, which is exactly the arrangement Georgina’s residential parking bylaw takes an interest in once the season is over. We take the boat off the driveway and keep it until spring.
Our yard is local, so the trip from a Keswick driveway or the Cook’s Bay ramps is short. Pricing is published by the foot rather than quoted on a call, which on this lake is unusual. See the wider Georgina page for the rest of the south shore, or the Lake Simcoe overview for how the two yards split the lake.
An early freeze means an early booking. The Cook’s Bay end of our schedule fills before the Barrie end opens.
